In a conscious effort to take into consideration the benefits of conserving the environment, Dan-Loc has decided to implement the “Go Green” initiative. Part of this initiative is to allow our customers and visitors to the site to be able have the paperless option. This takes away from excess printing and paper use if you choose so; providing efforts as a whole to conserve our environment.

“Should I re-use Stud Bolts and Nuts?”
Dan-Loc is approached periodically for advice on the reuse of stud bolts and nuts subsequent to their original installation. We do not recommend it.
Here’s why:
- Studs bolts are designed and manufactured for a prescribed amount of preload, or tension, when installed. The amount of preload applied is very important in the performance of the sealed joint. With too little preload, the connection is apt to leak. With too great a preload (and here’s the risk), the bolt will be stretched beyond the design limits of its elastic range. In other words, it will be hyper-extended and weakened by some unknown amount below its design yield and tensile strength. In addition, the thread pitch (number of threads per inch) also will be stretched beyond design limits such that the normal clearances built into the stud’s threads and the nut’s threads are diminished to the point that the stud and nut cannot be assembled.
- Studs and nuts that have been used at other job sites also may not meet the requirements for the current planned installation. For example, B7 Studs and 2H Nuts that were previously installed where there was no exposure to sour gas (hydrogen sulfide gas) or sub-zero temperatures would be woefully inadequate and prone to failure in an application where those conditions are present.
Finally, from an economic perspective, fastener cost represents a very small percentage of total equipment costs. For the degree of failure risk avoidance that new fasteners represent, buying new makes a lot of sense.
